3 surprise Rafael Devers trade destinations for the Red Sox slugger
By Tim Boyle
These three teams should take a stab at trading for Boston Red Sox star slugger Rafael Devers.
Many baseball fans want to know whether or not the Boston Red Sox will trade Rafael Devers. The star third baseman is on a team seemingly wading in the standings with at best a chance to finish around .500 next year.
Devers is without a contract following the 2023 season, making him an early candidate to get traded this summer or sooner. Some obvious trade destinations include the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Francisco Giants. What about some of the other possibilities?
The beauty of trading for Devers is that teams without serious plans of winning it all in 2023 can be an option. As long as they’re willing to extend him immediately, we should include these three clubs as surprise destinations for the Red Sox star slugger.
1) Why the Rangers should make a trade with the Red Sox for Rafael Devers
The Texas Rangers have revamped their starting rotation but not done much else to get better this offseason. Their two big offensive additions came last winter when they brought in Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. They somehow got an even better season out of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. A trade for Devers can give them one of the best infields in baseball to go with their new-and-improved starting staff.
The Rangers do have Josh Jung prepared to take over the bulk of innings at the position. How sure are they that he won’t undergo a season-long slump or even become a big league contributor Devers is?
A trade package headlined by Jung to the Red Sox help out both teams. The Red Sox get a future third base option they can groom and have patience with. The Rangers get immediately better and don’t have to be concerned about whether or not Jung is “the guy.”
The Rangers have a chance to make a serious run in 2023. These other two surprise trade destinations for Devers will, however, need to wait a little longer.
