Teams that should look to trade for Derek Carr: New Orleans Saints

The Saints aren’t the perfect trade partner, simply because they’ve gutted themselves of valuable draft picks already. They’re stuck in a weird situation right now where they aren’t very competitive, yet don’t have the draft picks to retool with youth.

There are some talented pieces on the team. The defense, in particular, is strong. Offensively, they could trade pieces like Alvin Kamara if they wanted to go for a drastic rebuild this offseason.

It will be a strange balance to build a deal for Carr because the team will want to retain some of its competitive pieces in such a scenario. The Raiders were fourth-worst in yards allowed and seventh-worst in points allowed last year. They allowed the fifth-most touchdowns.

Maybe New Orleans can send over some of their defensive pieces while holding most of that part of the team intact to get Carr? Since Las Vegas has telegraphed its intentions with Carr, it might not take much. Perhaps the team can even move some of its later-round picks to get the deal done (Jeff Howe thinks so, subscription required).

New Orleans has been lost at QB since Drew Brees retired. This season, it was Jameis Winston for the first few weeks, and Andy Dalton the rest of the way. Taysom Hill, a utility player, subbed in for some unique looks once in a while.

The Saints could use a definitive answer at quarterback. Could Carr be it?

Side note: Saints head coach Dennis Allen coached Carr for a brief time when he was the head guy with the Raiders.
