Cowboys rumors: Ranking 5 ‘something big’ moves the team could make
3. Cowboys rumors: Trading for DeAndre Hopkins would be great, but not the best WR move
Full disclosure, I felt that it was more likely that Brandin Cooks would be a wide receiver trade target for Dallas than DeAndre Hopkins. However, reports on throughout Combine week indicate that Cooks is more willing to give new head coach DeMeco Ryans — and probably more notably a new quarterback — a chance with the Texans and that a trade “isn’t imminent“.
I would’ve had the Cooks trade in this exact same spot of these rankings in terms of big moves the Cowboys can make. With that said, it seems a bit more likely with the buzz out of Indianapolis that the Arizona Cardinals trade Hopkins than it is that the Texans trade Cooks.
There have been rumblings for weeks that the Cardinals could try to save money by making a deal that sends the wide receiver to another team. More importantly, though, the price could be cheap. Reports from the Combine indicate that a second-round pick combined with a conditional pick could land Hopkins in a trade.
That’s a pretty agreeable price for the Cowboys as Hopkins would, in essence, be a bigger version of what Amari Cooper was with added 50-50 ball ability. That, however, is also not exactly or ideally what Dallas needs to round out its wide receiver corps. It wouldn’t be a bad trade by any stretch and one that fans would be hyped for, but it’s also not the best move.
