3. Taylor Motter will not be on the Cardinals roster on September 1

Motter has been a major role player of late for the Cardinals. With the need for a day off, various injuries, and then the trade of Paul DeJong, Motter has played just about every position in the Cardinals infield.

He’s come off the bench to pinch hit or run for a batter. He’s done everything asked of him.

But, with Tommy Edman back from the injured list playing shortstop and Nolan Gorman taking his position at second base, Motter may be taking up a roster spot for a younger talent ready to shine. That younger talent ready to shine would be the Cardinals’ top prospect, Masyn Winn.

Once Winn arrives, he will take on the duties at shortstop, allowing Edman to return to his super-utility role where he can play shortstop, second base, or patrol the outfield. Gorman and Edman can split duties at second base, with Gorman serving as designated hitter. The possibilities are seemingly endless.

Those possibilities won’t include Motter, though.
