The 2012 London Olympics are now officially in the books. The world’s greatest athletes came together and performed on the largest stage to decide who was the best in their respective discipline or sport in the world. Now that the competition is over, it is time to end the games in style.
As London did with the opening ceremony “Isles of Wonder” — produced by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle – they looked to get the world talking as they close out the games with a ceremony produced by Stephen Daldry and along with creative director and choreographer Kim Gavin, designer Es Devlin, music director David Arnold and lighting director Patrick Woodroffe.
Daldry says the closing ceremony was “one of the most exciting events I have ever seen.”
Performers for the closing ceremony include the performers of the Olympics official song “Survival” Muse, as well as acts like Take That, The Who, George Michael, Spice Girls, Ed Sheeran, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Madness, Kaiser Chiefs, Brian May and One Direction.
The ceremony also featured the handing over of the Olympic flag from London mayor Boris Johnson to Eduardo Paes, the mayor of Rio de Janiero which will host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
For those who missed the closing ceremony or for those who simply would like to relive the scenes from the end of the 2012 London Olympics, we have gathered some of the images from the closing ceremony. Check out the photo gallery below and prepare to get ready for the 2014 Winter Games.
