This one is dripping with irony folks. The tragic murder case involving double amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius took an odd turn on Thursday when it was revealed that the lead detective in the case against the runner is himself involved in a murder case. Hilton Botha is set to appear in court this May on “several charges of attempted murder”, this according to South African police.

The prosecution against Pistorius began to fall apart upon the revelation of Botha’s past which involved not only the attempted murder charges but Botha’s own admission that the police don’t have enough evidence to challenge that Pistorius shot and killed his model girlfriend on accident. There has also been past police blunders by Botha brought up to discredit him and his investiagation.

The prosecution said they had no knowledge of the murder charges against Botha when they put him on the stand to tell why he didn’t think Pistorius should be allowed bail.

Let that sink in for a moment: a man charged with not one but several attempted murders took the stand to explain why he didn’t think a man who (so far) accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend shouldn’t be allowed bail. That’s like Kim Kardashian writing a children’s book on why they should abstain from being morons.

Medupe Simasiku, the spokesman for the prosecutors charging Pistorius with premeditated murder, said he couldn’t accurately state how the charges against Botha will affect the case or the current investigation.

“The (Pistorius) prosecutors were not aware of those charges (against Botha),” Simasiku, of the National Prosecution Agency, said. “We are calling up the information so we can get the details of the case. From there we can take action and see if we remove him from the investigation or if he stays.”

As the case stands now, Pistorius is claiming he fired four shots through a locked bathroom door because he feared an intruder was inside. However, the prosecution is arguing that Pistorius intended to kill his girlfriend after they had a fight earlier that morning. THe case is still only in the bail hearing stages, but Botha’s involvement in a murder case of his own seems to be only the first of many twists this case is bound to take on it’s way to a resolution.
