Yet another free agent domino has fallen before the session has even begun. Hours after top free agent-to-be Ryan Clady was slapped with a franchise tag by the Denver Broncos, the Chicago Bears have done the very same thing to their prized free agent possession as they’ve franchised defensive tackle Harry Melton.

Chicago Tribune Bears beat writer Vaughn McClure was the first to report the deal.:

Had he hit the open market, Melton would have been one of the most sought after players available. With the Bears last season, Melton proved to be insanely valuable, especially considering his 37 combined sacks, hits and hurries which was ranked fifth among other DE’s in the NFL. In a Bears defense that is going to likely be rebuilt to some extent, keeping Melton means a sturdy defensive front remains consistent.

Melton will remain an anchor on that defensive front and can continue to grow along side Julius Peppers and others coming up on that line. Chicago has until July 15th to work out a long term deal with the Bears, as after that Melton and the Bears are only allowed to agree on a one year deal.
