Report: Chiefs Could Trade Branden Albert

It came as a bit of a surprise on Monday when the Kansas City Chiefs decided to use the franchise tag on offensive tackle Branden Albert right at the 4:00 p.m. ET deadline. It was initially expected that Albert would hit the free agent market which would clear the way for the Chiefs to select Luke Joeckel with the first-overall pick, but that was all in question after Albert got the tag.

Now that we are nearly a day past the franchise tag deadline, there is a report that could shine some light on what the Chiefs had in mind when they placed the tag on Albert.

According to a report from Sam Mellinger of Kansas City Star, there is a chance that the Chiefs could look to trade Albert.

The thought process behind trading Albert is that the team could be trying to recoup some of the draft picks that they lost in the trade for Alex Smith. If that really was the team’s intention with placing the tag on Albert, John Dorsey and Andy Reid could be even bigger winners leading up to the free agency period than we had initially thought.

With this latest rumor, you should still consider Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel as the favorite to be selected first overall.

With Reid as HC and the #1 pick, I am thoroughly intrigued by the Chiefs this year. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

I was dead wrong about this team last year. I truly believed they could contend for the AFC West and hopefully they can live up to those expectations this season. They are putting all of the right pieces in place.

I saw ESPN talking about the Kansas City Chiefs in a positive light on ESPN for the first time in YEARS. I’m lovin’ it. Keep it up Andy Reid, John Dorsey, and most of all Clark Hunt. The man has proved me wrong and opened up the pocketbook for the things we need, and it shows, and I will show my support by buying tickets this year. Hell pick up some decent draft picks I might take a loan out on my pickup to buy a beer, too!

They are definitely being aggressive and that should help them out moving forward

Despite the possibility of getting their 2nd round pick back I do not see them trading Albert. First of all their are several quality LT’s in this years draft. Secondly, whoever traded for him would have to be able to sign him to a long term contract. Lastly you have a known commodity in Albert. Why would you trade that away for a guy that is unknown outside of college. Then when you throw in that Albert wants to remain a Chief and has shown steady improvement.
