Free agent safety Dashon Goldson had expressed his desire to return to the San Francisco 49ers, but all reports indicate Goldson will not be returning to the team in 2013.

While Goldson won’t get his wish of returning to the Bay Area, he will be highly sought after on the open market and will have his choice of potential suitors. Better yet, Goldson seems set for a big pay day.

According to Pro Football Talk, Goldson will be the hottest safety in free agency.

One thing that will play into Goldson’s favor is that his agent can start negotiating with teams once the legal tampering period begins at midnight on Saturday morning. That gives Goldson a head start over another safety in the free agency class — Ed Reed.

Reed represents himself and players are not allowed to talk with teams until March 12. Since Reed represents himself, he will not have the benefit of early discussions during the legal tampering period.

Goldson has hinted that he would be interested in playing for the Cincinnati Bengals next season, but he will have many more options once free agency begins.

He could be one of the first players to sign a big contract and leave the open market.
