The Green Bay Packers have had their eye on ex-St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson and it now appears as though their ready to put a ring on his finger. The Packers are reportedly “closing in” on a deal that will land them the coveted free agent running back who is poised to take the Packers offense to a level it’s never been before.

From Scout.com:

"On Tuesday, a source who had been in contact with the Rams told Packer Report that Rams officials believed Jackson would sign with Green Bay. On Wednesday night, an agent repping one of the better backs in the draft told Packer Report that he was under the impression that the Packers were “closing in” on Jackson."

Jackson landing with Green Bay has long been viewed as a brilliant idea as it gives the Packers something they’ve never had before: a running game. Not since the days of Dorsey Levens have the Packers had a respectable running back and even Levens is pushing it. Jackson landing in Green Bay would also give him something he’s never had: a Super Bowl caliber team.

Of course, the Packers would need to do something about their swiss cheese offensive line if Jackson wants to be successful, but the idea of him at Aaron Rodgers disposal is something opposing defenses will not look forward to preparing for. No numbers have been discussed but Jackson’s been linked to the Packers as far back as the trade deadline last November and we could finally have resolution soon.
