CBS Sports college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb has been providing some incredible insight from the CBS set during the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but during a bit on Thursday, Gottlieb made his co-hosts uncomfortable with an awkward joke about the “white man’s perspective” on things on a set with four African American co-hosts.

“Cream rising to the crop. I don’t know why you guys asked me, I’m just here to bring diversity to the set here. Give the kind of white man’s perspective on things from the point guard position,” Gottlieb joked.

Greg Gumble looked away, while Greg Anthony looked upset with the remark. Charles Barkley, the anti-PC king, and Kenny Smith tried to break the silence with an awkward laugh.

Here is video of Gottlieb’s comments:

After facing a lot of backlash for his joke, Gottlieb issued a brief apology.

“It was not a smart thing to say and I apologize,” Gottlieb said.

It’s unfortunate that we have reached a point where a joke is met with such negative reaction. It may not have been the smartest thing for Gottlieb to say, but it was a harmless comment that was meant to lighten the mood.

Gottlieb quickly learned that we are in an increasingly politically correct society and everyone is waiting for a misstep so they can jump on their soap boxes and cry foul.
