The Invicta FC 5 online pay-per view concluded on Friday night after a main event between atomweight champion Jessica Penne and “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson live from the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. “Big” John McCarthy got the honor to be the third person in the cage.

Immediately, the 105-pound women came out with a lightning quick pace as both fighters were looking to press the action.

After some back and forth action standing, Penne decided to pull guard and take the fight to the mat. With Waterson in her guard, Penne worked a body triangle before being very active and looking to secure a submission. The position eventually flipped with Waterson on her back. Waterson used her flexibility to stay active off of her back and the Greg Jackson product was using some creative and high level jiu jitsu to threaten her opponent.

Waterson went from an omoplata attempt before ultimately using the rubber guard to transition into the armbar. After an initial threat, Penne was able to pull out of the submission attempt and escape round one.

Round two picked up where it left off with the fight quickly going to the mat for some nifty ground work.

Waterson showed off her strong base by mounting the champion and eventually achieving full mount despite Penne’s attempts to shrimp and fight out of the position. Penne was eventually able to work herself out of the position and went for a gogoplata attempt that initially looked to be threatening. After four minutes on the ground, the fight returned to the feet for a brief time before going right bat to the canvas to end the second frame.

Penne was the aggressor to kick off round three. She came out looking for the top position and had Waterson in serious danger with a flurry of punches, but Waterson was able to work her way out of danger before giving up her back and giving the champion great transition. Penne was able to get a very deep armbar but Waterson managed an unbelievable escape despite looking like her arm was about to snap.

Despite not being able to find the finish, Penne dominated the third frame as we got ready for the championship rounds.

The two women entered the fourth round with Waterson showing off her great takedown defense and flexibility until she was able to position herself for the fight ending armbar. Penne tapped almost immediately as Waterson claimed Invicta FC gold.

The performance from Waterson and Penn was one of most technical women’s mixed martial arts bouts in history. It was a brilliant performance from Waterson and a well-deserved victory.
