The New York Jets now have the luxury of picking twice in the top half of this Thursday’s first round of the NFL Draft, but the question now moves to who will be selected when the Jets go on the clock twice in one night. Some believe that a Geno Smith-Tavon Austin combo is a very real possibility but according to beat writer Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets fans had better “familiarize” themselves with Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones.

Should Jones be selected, he fills a major need for New York. The Jets desperately need an edge rushing presence at linebacker and that’s exactly what Jones would provide. He was having some reported medical problems earlier this offseason, but those reports were either exaggerated or Jones has overcome whatever neck issue he was dealing with.

Metha remains one of the most plugged in and reliable writers on the beat in any sport, and while not everything he says is gospel truth, the fact that he’s bracing Jets fans 48 hours before the draft tells you that he’s likely not just making this up on his own.

Once viewed as a top 5 pick by Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr., Jones is without a doubt going to be selected somewhere in the first-round and if Mehta’s inkling is correct, he’ll be off the board no later than the 13th overall pick.
