Pete Carroll Plans on Using Ex-LSU Running Back Spencer Ware at Two Positions

The Seattle Seahawks seem to be loaded with weapons all over the field, but that didn’t stop them from going big in the draft to bring home some more talent to make another run at a Super Bowl. In the sixth round of this year’s draft, the Seahawks pulled the trigger on selecting LSU Tigers running back Spencer Ware, and while he carried the ball as a halfback at LSU, Pete Carroll has different plans for him in Seattle.
Carroll told the Seattle Times that he plans on using Ware as both a running back and fullback in training camp to see which position better suits the rookie runner.
“He’s going to work at both. I want him to learn to play fullback for us and compete at that spot,” Carroll said to the Times. “We know he can run, he’s a really aggressive tough runner. We love that about him, So we are trying to transfer that nature to the fullback spot. He came in at 218 (he’s listed at 229) which is a little light for that spot, but I don’t mind at all at this point he wants to come in and compete and battle and be in good shape.”
During the rookie camp, Carroll noted that he was impressed with Ware and loved what he was seeing out of the rookie. The Seahawks aren’t planning on usurping incumbent runner Marshawn Lynch, but they’ve established a love for offensive weapons and finding a good way to utilize Ware fits right in with the current M.O. in Seattle.
“He’s an exciting football player. You guys get a chance to see him in pre-season when he starts to get physical he’s going to show up,” Carroll said of Ware. “He’s very, very tough. Might take some time to make the transition but we are going to let him run throughout though so he is ready to run the football, too.’’
