Earlier in the day, we passed along the reports that there is growing belief the New York Jets will either trade or release quarterback Mark Sanchez before the start of the season. The development that allows the Jets to part ways with Sanchez is the fact that the coaching staff is reportedly “smitten” about second-round signal-caller Geno Smith.

From Brian Costello of the New York Post:

"You can tell from talking to people around the team during this weekend’s rookie mini-camp that many in the organization are smitten with new quarterback Geno Smith. It’s beginning to look more and more like the starting job is his to lose."

Smith reportedly had “great zip” on the ball during the rookie minicamps and had a strong command of the huddle. Smith also held players only meetings at the team hotel when the Jets weren’t working on the field.

The rookie also held his own with the media and erased any concerns that the team may have had about the “diva” label.

It is becoming clearer by the day that the Jets, who are in full-blown rebuilding mode, are prepared to roll with a rookie quarterback in 2013.
