The Dallas Mavericks like to spend money to win titles, but they’ve not spent money in a year and they’ve won only one title since Mark Cuban took over. But while the Mav’s were on the outs this season, they’re looking to reverse their fortunes and add some backcourt talent in free agency. According to the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, the Mavericks are expected to target guard Jarrett Jack and Jerryd Bayless this offseason.

"The source said two point guards who interest the Mavs are Golden State’s Jarrett Jack and Memphis’ Jerryd Bayless. Both players figured prominently in their teams’ runs in the current playoffs, and both will become free agents in July."

Targeting two guards like Jack and Bayless are exactly what the Mavericks are looking for. They’re likely going to lose O.J. Mayo this offseason and they realize a need to get younger — or at least younger than they’ve been. The only question is can the Mavericks afford to make a run at adding both players, who instantly would make them a playoff contending team?

Dallas is currently being very active in shopping the 13th overall pick in the draft in order to free up space to make a run exactly as described. While the 13th pick is hardly the most valuable of lottery picks being potentially shopped, a team like the Chicago Bulls or Minnesota Timberwolves may bite on the chance to move up and take a prospect the need to fill a hole.

Both Jack and Bayless have been massive instruments of destruction when it comes to how they’re current teams used them in the postseason. Jack was key for the Warriors run into the semifinals and Bayless is still running with the Grizzlies in the Conference Finals.

Neither name is as flashy as Dwight Howard, a player also rumored to be making eye contact with Dallas from across the room, but if Dallas secures a backcourt of Jarrett Jack and Jerryd Bayless, the Mav’s may be back on their way to being serious contenders in the West.
