Wow. Things got really ugly between these two teams tonight. Cody Ross was hit by a pitch to start off the 5th inning. While it’s never good to have a player get hit, this didn’t seem like it was intentional. Play resumed with no real bumps in the bottom of the inning. However, in the bottom of the 6th, rookie sensation Yasiel Puig was hit in the face by a pitch from Ian Kennedy. The pitch hit Puig in the nose. However, he somehow remained in the game. That looked like it would be it..

However, in the top of the 7th, the first hitter of the inning, Miguel Montero, was drilled by a fastball in the back by Greinke, prompting the benches to clear. However, there were no punches thrown or anything. Things settled down and play resumed. In the bottom of the 7th, Ian Kennedy decided that the best way to react to the situation would be to drill Greinke in the head. The pitch hit him in the earflap of the helmet, prompting an all out melee between the two teams. Ian Kennedy was ejected immediately.

When the dust cleared, D’Backs manager Kirk Gibson was thrown out of the game, along with Yasiel Puig, and a few others. It will be interesting to see how many suspensions are handed out as a cause of this. Puig was the first out of the dugout and had to be restrained, Josh Beckett had to be held back, and even manager Don Mattingly grabbed someone and threw him to the ground. Meanwhile, fans were screaming for the duration of the brawl.

Overall, just a very intense night in LA.
