Mississippi State Defeats Oregon State in Game 1 of NCAA College World Series

This afternoon’s game was a matchup of Oregon St Beaver’s Andrew Moore versus Mississippi St Bulldog’s Kendall Graveman. Moore was named the 2013 Pac 12 Freshman of the Year for his excellence on the mound.

Oregon State jumped on the board early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first thanks to a double by Michael Conforto, which brought in Tyler Smith. After a ground ball up the middle by Danny Hayes, Conforto scores bringing the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first.

The Bulldogs responded by loaded the bases thanks to a hit batter, a double, and then a walked batter. A blooper to left center brings in a run, putting the Bulldogs on the board. Another pop fly drops into right center, and Miss State takes the lead 3-2.

Oregon State was able to tie the game at 3 in the bottom of the fourth, when Hayes scored thanks to a Kavin Keyes triple.

The Beavers again commanded the lead in the bottom of the fifth, Peterson singled to right, and then Conforto hit a ground rule double to deep center to put runners on third and second. Davis grounded out to second, put brought in Peterson to take the lead 4-3. Pitching change is then made by the Bulldogs, putting Ross Mitchell (12-0, 1.35 ERA) on the mound.  After a full count, Mitchell strikes out Hayes to end the inning.

Andrew Moore went strong for seven innings, but after a single by Detz to right center Moore was replaced by Matt Boyd (10-3 2.03 ERA). Renfroe reached on an infield single, moving Detz to second. Rea doubled then doubled to right center, bringing home Detz and Renfroe. The Bulldogs now had the lead, 5-4 at the top of the eighth.

During the bottom of the eighth, the Beavers put two runners on thanks to a throwing error and then single to right field. Mitchell is replaced by closer Jonathan Holder with two on and one out. Holder was able to get out of the jam, Rodriguez flied out to right and Jansen struck out swinging. Bulldogs still lead.

The top of the ninth was the Bulldogs last chance to add some insurance runs. Schultz replaced Boyd on the mound, and it was a quick three up three down inning.

It all came down to the bottom of the ninth for the Beavers. Tyler Smith singled to left field, Andy Peterson is called out after bunting foul with two strikes, and Michael Conforto walks to put runners on first and second with one out. Dylan Davis strikes out for the second out of the inning. It is now up to Danny Hayes, flies out to right field, only about a foot from going out for a home run. The Mississippi Bulldogs managed t0 hold off the Beavers to take Game 1.

In Moore’s 7.1 innings pitched, he had six hits, five runs (two unearned, three earned) two walks, and two strikeouts. Miss State’s Graveman only went 4.2 innings, six hits, six runs (two earned, four unearned), two strikeouts and one base on balls.
