The NBA Draft is fast approaching which means teams may be looking at trades as a way of organizing what the best plan of attack for the big night is. The Phoenix Suns are one of the teams picking high enough in this uncertain draft who are trying to plan out all the possibilities that could happen when the clock starts on the draft, and one of the scenarios they’ve looked at involves them trading Marcin Gortat if a big man prospect falls to them at fifth overall.

Per a report in the Arizona Republic:

"A big-man acquisition could spur trade talk involving center Marcin Gortat, particularly with the Suns being open to the idea of landing another first-round pick. Portland, which holds the No. 10 pick, has held an interest in Gortat and a draft slot like that could be used on a big man like Indiana’s athletically and fundamentally solid Cody Zeller or Pittsburgh’s raw-but-rising Steven Adams."

Gortat is a guy the Suns haven’t been actively trying to move but his name being kicked around in possible trade talks is an example of how much a few players falling in the draft can change the makeup or strategy of a team.

It’s a very real scenario to consider as it’s still unknown who the first player in the draft will be and beyond that it’s an even bigger mystery as to how things will ultimately play out.

You also have to believe that the Suns are not the only team with a strategy like this as everyone in the lottery seems to be interested in moving around the draft order which means we’re likely in for a flurry of activity on draft night.
