Boston Celtics "Leaning Towards" Picking Up Paul Pierce's Option Next Season

Boston Celtics fans have been looking for closure on the whole Paul Pierce situation for about two months now and it seems a new option has arisen as to what the team can do moving forward. While the seem to be shopping him around for a first-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein the Celtics are “leaning towards” picking up Pierce’s option for next season thus keeping him on roster.

This is a n entirely new development as up until now it appeared as though the Celtics were convinced that Pierce was not going to be a part of the future. However, the team wants to being back Kevin Garnett and they feel one way to do that is to make sure Pierce or Doc Rivers comes back. With the option of Rivers coming back now firmly our of the question, hop now rests on potentially bringing back Pierce.

It wouldn’t be cheap and it sort of clashes with the mantra of rebuilding that shipping off Rivers to Los Angeles signaled, but Boston now appears open to brining back two of the Big 3 and it might end up actually happening.

A trade offer that blows them away will change their minds, but Boston seems to be changing their plans for the future and Pierce now apparently factors into those plans.

Paul Pierce at age 36 next season is still an above average defender and scorer, not to mention a life long Celtic. I’d be happy to see Pierce start at SG next year, Jeff Green at SF, Rondo at PG, and KG at C. The only piece missing is a talented PF! Bass is mediocre and Sullinger cannot defend and is coming off back surgery. I am hoping the Celtics can package Bass plus one of their numerous shooting guards and the 1st round pick they acquired for Doc in return for a solid big man. Maybe a sign and trade involving Big-Al, Milsap or Carl Landry (who is opting out of his contract). Hmmm wouldn’t this be a nice starting 5:
