The Dallas Mavericks were desperately trying to move out of the 13th overall slot in the NBA Draft but they failed to secure a trade before the 2pm deadline on Thursday which means they were going to stay put in and make a selection. There is now a ton of mystery around the Mavericks pick, almost as much as there was heading into the draft about who would end up picking 13th overall.

So in staying put, the Dallas Mavericks selected Kelly Olynyk from Gonzaga with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.

At the last minute the Mavericks traded the pick to the Boston Celtics so this selection will be heading out East.

There was already trade activity before the Mavericks went on the clock and the thinking was that they were doing so with another team’s interests in mind. Dallas is looking to make a big run after Dwight Howard  and a draft pick really didn’t help them out in the way they wanted it too. Really, to Mark Cuban all a draft pick represents does is eat up salary cap space that he wants to designate towards throwing at Dwight Howard and this is not a pick that is expected to stay in Dallas long.

That being said, .. is a solid prospect and in Boston he should be able to produce at a very high level and help fuel the rebuilding process that the Celtics are now getting underway with.
