Earlier today, Yahoo Sports reported that the Dallas Mavericks were in trade discussions with the Boston Celtics with the intent to acquire point guard Rajon Rondo.

The hope, at least from Dallas’ standpoint is to not only bring in one of the league’s premier one guards but to pair Rondo with Dwight Howard.

Good luck, as according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the lone player the Celtics have interest in is Mavs superstar Dirk Nowitzki.

"Mavs undeniably fans of Rondo, as @fishsports reported, but “trade talks” to this point have gone nowhere because Celts want only one MavMavs: We’re interested in Rondo. Celts: We want Dirk. So: More teams gotta jump in or Boston gotta budge for meaningful talks to take place"

Clearly the Mavericks have zero interest in trading Dirk, who will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season. The Celtics’ interest in Dirk doesn’t really come from a desire for his talent as it does for his hefty expiring contract, which would allow the Celtics to clear even more bad contracts off their cap to expedite the rebuilding process.

With few trade pieces outside of cap space and Shawn Marion, it’s going to be difficult for both sides to come to an agreement.
