2013 US Women’s Open: Inbee Park Makes History At Sebonack

Rolex Number one ranked Inbee Park made history when she hung on to win her third major championship this year. In fact, she has won ever major on the LPGA Tour in 2013. Park carded a final round 74 on Sunday afternoon to win at Sebonack Golf Club on Long Island by four strokes over South Korean, I.K. Kim, and five strokes over South Korean So Yeon Ryu, who were the only three players to finish under par.

Inbee Park got on the bogey train twice on Sunday with bogeys at the sixth and seventh holes, and again on the treacherous back nine where she struggled on Saturday. She made birdies at nine and ten, but no one else was making birdies either. Park hit 51 of 56 fairways during the week at Sebonack, but her sweet putting stroke was by far what got her to the winners circle.

The 23 year-old Sough Korean took only 114 putts over four days to capture her sixth tournament of the year, and her third consecutive major. Former LPGA Star, and Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez said on Morning Drive that Inbee Park was one of the best pressure putters she had ever seen. That rings true coming from someone who Ben Crenshaw got tips from, and was one of the best putters in history.

Inbee Park ties history by becoming only the second woman in history to ever win three consecutive majors in one calendar year, and has a chance to make history when the LPGA goes to the home of golf, St. Andrews for the Women’s British Open in August. The controversy has already started if a win at St Andrews would encompass a Grand Slam. The LPGA has added The Evian Championship in September as a fifth major this year.

Babe Zaharias won three consecutive majors on the LPGA Tour in it’s infancy back in 1950. There were only three majors in those days, and Inbee Park has tied that record. All eyes will be on Park when she goes to England, and if anyone has the even temperament and putting stroke to pull off a fourth major, it will be Inbee Park.
