The Los Angeles Clippers were reportedly in talks to land Orlando Magic guard Aaron Afflalo before the NBA Draft but not only did the trade fail to happen but it appears that the Clippers have pulled off of their pursuit of Afflalo for another guard — free agent Tony Allen. According to NBA scribe Mark Heisler, Doc Rivers is looking into reuniting with a former player of his from his Boston days.

Allen is garnering a lot of attention in free agency as the Trailblazers, Jazz and others seem to be interested in signing the veteran point guard. The move would make sense for both sides should Allen sign with the Clippers as not only would he be back with former head coach Doc Rivers but he’d be joining a team ready to contend for a title right now.

He’d be backing up Chris Paul, playing under Rivers in one of the hottest cities in the country while being paid to play for one of the most promising teams heading into the 2013-14 campaign. I made the argument that Portland had similar selling points in terms of talent and promise but the Clippers are operating on a whole different level of potential and that might be something a veteran like Allen is very interested in becoming a part of.
