The Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff is gushing over rookie running back Giovani Bernard. They say he will be integral in the improvement of the Bengals offense. Bernard is said to be good enough catching passes that he could play wide receiver.
“Having evaluated him and watched every game he played this year and had a chance to work him out, and having spent a lot of time with him,” Bengals running back coach Hue Jackson said, via the team’s website. “he has that skill set where I think he could play and be an every down player.”
That could be bad news for Bengals starting wide receiver BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Even Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is excited about the young player and hinted that he could be shouldering the load for their ground game carrying the ball 25 times and grinding it out, not just being a home run threat.
“It’s not always the yardage total that’s most important,” Lewis said. “When your back is carrying 25 times, it means that even though the yardage will vary, you’re controlling the ball, controlling the clock, and keeping your defense off the field. As it shows for us, that is very likely going to be a winning combination.”
Could be an interesting sleeper pick in your fantasy league if they’re right. He will be in a division known for tough defenses in Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
