Plenty of NFL quarterbacks have been given massive contract extensions as of late, including Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo considering he is now a $100 million man.

Add Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford as the next big name to potentially cash in big time. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports on Twitter that the two sides are working on a “blockbuster” extension:

The news of a big extension should not be a surprise. Stafford is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and the Lions have a nice core in place with guys like Calvin Johnson and the newly acquired Reggie Bush.

Detroit is making the right move here. There is no sense in letting contract negotiations drag out. Chances are Stafford could have a career year now that the team around him continues to improve, so getting a deal done now could also save the team some cash in the long run.

Stafford is just 25 years old and already one of the best in the NFL.  Stay tuned as we’ll have the official numbers when they are released. Apparently as early as today.
