The San Antonio Spurs recently used the 2013 NBA free agency period to bring on Marco Belinelli in order to upgrade the bench to make another run at an NBA championship.

Many thought this move signaled the end of Gary Neal’s time with the Spurs, as he too was set to enter the free-agent market.

Maybe not.

According to ESPN’s Jared Zwerling via Twitter, league sources now say Neal is going to re-up with the Spurs:

That is a swerve not man folks saw coming. It was hard to tell if the Spurs wanted Neal back at any price and it was even more doubtful Neal wanted to come back in a reduced capacity.

There is no way Neal will average 22 minutes per game like he did last season now that Belinelli is on the squad soaking up minutes at shooting guard. Still, if a deal goes down, Neal may have bigger things in mind than how much playing time he will receive. He likely wants another shot at a championship.
