More than once in the first half of the 2013 season, the Colorado Rockies have had an opportunity to seize first place in their division. We’re not talking about being in first place during the opening week of the season; this would have been a legitimate hold on first place once the “small sample” qualifiers had faded into the distance. A sweep of the Diamondbacks or a sweep of the Dodgers and it could have been Colorado in first place.

The Rockies were not able to capitalize on either of those chances, but they are still well within reach of the top of what is admittedly a weak division.

If you had told Rockies fans that their team would be within five games of first place as the All-Star break approached, every single one would have signed up for that scenario. Throw in the fact that Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, and Michael Cuddyer will appear in the All-Star game and you quickly realize that there have been more successes than failures thus far in 2013.

Coming off a 98 loss season, that’s all we could have hoped for. Here’s a look at the mid-season awards for the Rockies.
