Chris Carpenter Injury: St. Louis Cardinals pitcher has ‘a long way to go’

Oct 15, 2012; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants fans celebrate after second baseman Marco Scutaro (not pictured) hit a three-RBI single off of St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter (29) during the fourth inning of game two of the 2012 NLCS at AT

The St. Louis Cardinals are a team oft mentioned in MLB trade rumors as of late thanks to injuries to the pitching staff, particularly the shoulder issue that has been plaguing Chris Carpenter.

Carpenter has been spending time throwing rehab games, but contrary to popular recent reports, he’s not getting any closer to a return.

The report comes from Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“I have a long way to go before I can get outs up there,” he said. “If I can’t get outs down here, never mind getting outs up there.”

“I didn’t feel like I was as sharp as I needed to be or should have been,” Carpenter said inside a clubhouse meeting room as the Redbirds played out a one-sided loss. “It wasn’t what I was looking for.”

The Cardinals may want to get on the phone in search of pitching with the deadline approaching.

Carpenter is a critical piece for the Cardinals moving forward. The sooner he can return the better, but it does not sound like he will be ready to compete for quite some time.

Expect Carpenter back at some point in the second half, but how he’ll perform once healthy is another story entirely.

Been hoping Mo not counting on help from Carp 2nd half in lieu of going out & finding a starter to trade for. Any info on whether this is the case? At this point, any forthcoming help from Carp should just be considered a bonus.
