In the grand scheme of things, the New York Jets and wide receiver Braylon Edwards appear to be bonded in a form that can’t be broken. The dysfunctional Jets and the sometimes-controversial Edwards somehow see eye-to-eye after all these years, and there is now a report that Edwards was in New York for a physical in preparation for another contract.

ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini is reporting that, according to a league source, the two sides are close to a deal, and that Edwards was at team headquarters on Wednesday for a physical. It would be third separate stay in New York for the former Michigan Wolverine, and the results have been admittedly mixed.

Edwards put up a semi-impressive season in 2010, catching 53 passes for 904 yards and 7 touchdowns, but that has really been the extent of the success with the Jets. He was brought in before the 2009 season as a high-profile move, but he disappointed (541 yards, 4 TDs), and in a return last year, he flamed out in a major way during just 3 games.

However, the Jets receiving corps, along with the rest of their roster is a bit of a disaster. Santonio Holmes is hurt (again) and has been underperforming for years, former 1st-rounder Stephen Hill is still very raw (and injured), and the quarterback situation is still up in the air. Sounds great, right?

Alas, Edwards seems to be heading back to New York, and there is always that glimmer of hope that he can return to his All-Pro form that he displayed in Cleveland.
