The following Twitter post from the official Major League Baseball Twitter account says it all:

If you follow the link, you’ll be treated to a fantastic video of David Ortiz shattering the dugout with his bat after a highly-contested ball/strike call that led to a strikeout in the 7th inning. Ortiz is the adopted “spiritual leader” of the Red Sox, and frankly, along with Dustin Pedroia, the heart and soul of the team. It was a bit jarring to see him react that way, but his quote from post-game explains his mindset in that moment.

"“I don’t pitch. I don’t play defense. I hit. You’re not going to take at-bat away from me.”"

There you go, David.

On the field, the Red Sox grabbed a 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Stephen Drew’s 2 home run game should probably be the lead story in the aftermath of Boston’s 62nd win of the season, but we all know that Ortiz has stolen the headlines.

The Red Sox are firmly in the mix for the AL pennant this season, and I would suppose that their manager and/or front office would prefer that their designated hitter put the bat down when he isn’t in the box.
