Chris Johnson attacks Adrian Peterson, is so incredibly wrong

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson told Pete Prisco of CBS Sports that he is baffled by talk that he lost a step. In the piece he throws his offensive line under the bus saying Adrian Peterson gets room to run.

“I did it first,” Johnson said of Adrian Peterson’s 2,000 yard season.

Well it is true that Chris Johnson ran for 2,000 yards before Adrian Peterson.

“Not one time did I sit back and say he did something that I can’t do. … He’s a great back. But I can’t sit here and say out of my own mouth that Adrian Peterson is better than me. All the things he’s done, I’ve done the same things. I did them first.”

Well, except….

  • Winning an MVP award, Peterson has 1, Johnson has zero.
  • Be named an All-Pro- Adrian was being named to his third All-Pro team when Johnson got his first and only nod.
  • Earn a trip to the Pro Bowl- Peterson was going to his second when you were going to his first.
  • Win a Pro Bowl MVP- Peterson has 1, Johnson has 0.
  • Be the NFL’s leading rusher- Adrian held that honor in 2008 before you got it in 2009.
  • Or lead the NFL in rushing more than once- Adrian has done it twice
  • Win the FedEx Ground Player of the Year Award- Adrian won in 2008 (and again in 2012) before Johnson got it in 2009.
  • Win the NFL Alumni Running Back of the year honor- Adrian held it in 2008 before Johnson in 2009.
  • Win AP NFL Rookie of the Year.
  • Be ranked #1 in the Top 100 Players of the NFL for a season. (Johnson was ranked #100 in 2012, while Peterson’s lowest rank was #8 in 2012)
  • Win Sporting News “Offensive Player of the Year” award
  • Win the Bert Bell Award- Peterson won in 2008 and 2012.
  • Win All-America Honors or being a unanimous All-American.
  • First team All-Big 12 for three seasons. (Johnson was All-C-USA twice)
  • Be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy

In all fairness though, Chris Johnson won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2008, Adrian Peterson won his in 2012.

Things that Chris Johnson has done that Adrian Peterson hasn’t:

  • Named to the All-C-USA team
  • Hawaii Bowl MVP
  • Rush for 2,000 yards and catch passes for 500 yards
  • Raced a Cheetah
  • Threw offensive line under bus

Of course I am biased.

ironic that johnson has spent his whole career comparing himself to AP, whereas AP compares himself to nobody.

Good point! or his comparisons are retired.

Good article Mike, I’m not worried about CJ2K, either is AP2.5K.

    • Mike Dyce

      I like that, AP 2.5K

It’s hilarious how these writer’s try to put words in the players mouths! Stick to what they actually say and stop adding your two cents! And CJ is not throwing his linemen under the bus, our (yes a Titan Fan) starters where constantly hurt last year, “which CJ also states this in the actual interview”! Plus the back ups sucked, we had to move our starting center to guard in a order to half make up for how bad the backups where! Too many times CJ was hit in the back field, so I ask how many times have you seen this happen to AP, Adrian Foster, or any other elite running back in this league?

“All the things he’s done, I’ve done the same things. I did them first.” It’s hard to say I misintepreted that statement. Second you need to learn the difference between reading what the author said and what Chris Johnson was quoted as saying. The author pointed out injury problems along the line, Chris Johnson did not. But he did throw his offensive coordinator under the bus too if you saw this quote:

“We became more of a passing team,” Johnson said. “They forgot about me at times.”

And lastly, Adrian had 1,019 yards (aka almost Johnson’s entire season total) rushing AFTER contact. The player who had the fifth most was Steven Jackson with 498. CJ2k wasn’t in the top 5 (aka not in the discussion)

      • Brandon Evans

I agree with CJ that the Offensive coordinator forgot about him and went pass first, anyone that follows the Titans could tell you that and this is why the staff is now fired! For the past 3 years the Titans have not had an experienced offensive coordinator and it has really hurt CJs stock. everytime CJ gets going he is pulled from the game at the same time his work load is being decreased and they wouldn’t design runs that were used when CJ was productive.

Loggains only wanted to call Draw and Dive plays and rarely used play action or counter runs! There was only one game when we used the pistol against the Rams and it worked perfectly then abandoned it for the rest of the season. People can hate on CJ all they want but he’s honest! CJ has the right to be pride full and proud of what he has accomplished, he came to the league after AD and has accomplished a lot of things before AD did.

I love AD he’s from Texas and I support all players from Texas, do I believe CJ is better than AD; NO is CJ capable of putting up the stats AD does just and could very well surpass him if used correctly. Hopefully Ken Whisenhut will bring out the best in CJ then all the critics can take a hike or do as they always do and start jocking players when their doing well!
