We’ve been writing a lot about San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis since he injured his hand during the team’s training camp practice yesterday and now there is a report about the extent of his injury. After fearing that Willis suffered a fractured right hand, the star linebacker underwent an x-ray Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the team’s suspicion of a broken hand was correct.

Mortensen says that the team will “proceed with caution” as Willis recovers, but there is no reason to fear that he will be unavailable for the season-opener.

This is the third fracture of Willis’ right hand and he also suffered a broken finger on the same hand during his playing days at Ole Miss, so he will have plenty of experience playing with the injury and potentially even having a cast on his hand.

It is obviously not an ideal situation for the team’s defensive star as they look to return to the Super Bowl this season, but it could have been a lot worse.
