NFL fans may have to wait just awhile longer to see the start of their competitive season, but fans of the “European football” were treated to a full slate of matches in the DFB Pokal as the German Cup kicked off over the weekend.

The 64 club tournament that pits clubs from the Bundesliga all the way down the German leagues gave footy fans 32 games to watch from Friday through Monday as some of the best clubs in the world started their season with the Pokal.

Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund began their Pokal seasons with expected wins as the two clubs advanced rather easily against lower league opposition. Champions League club Schalke also easily advanced on Monday as the first round came to a close.

Four Bundesliga clubs were upset by second and third division opponents in the opening round, all on Sunday as Eintracht Braunschweig, Werder Bremen, Nürnberg, and Borussia Monchengladbach could not find a way out of the first weekend of the tournament.
