American Horror Story: First Look Inside the Coven
In the third season of FX’s American Horror Story we are headed to the Big Easy. Last week, the people behind one of the creepiest shows on television gave us our first look at the new season.
This time, we will be following the story of a multi-generational family of witches in New Orleans.
The trailer doesn’t give away much in the means of storyline; however, trailers for American Horror Story never do.
Here is what we do know.
Series staple Jessica Lange will be returning to the cast. She will be playing a one of the witches by the name of Fiona. Sarah Paulson, who played medium Billie Dean Howard in Season 1, and then reporter Lana Winters in American Horror Story: Asylum, will be returning to the cast as well. She will play Fiona’s daughter Cordelia.
There is a number of other familiar faces returning to the cast.
Evan Peters, who played Tate Langdon in the first incantation of AHS, then played accused murderer Kit Walker in American Horror Story: Asylum will be returning to the case. However, as of right now, there are no details as to who he will be playing in Coven.
Also returning to the cast is Taissa Farmiga, younger sister of Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga. Fans of American Horror Story know her as Violet Harmon from the original American Horror Story: Murder House.
Producer Ryan Murphy announced on Twitter that Alexandra Breckenridge will be returning to the cast as well. You will remember her as the younger version of Moira, the Harmon’s maid, from Season 1. Frances Conroy, who played the present day version of Moira O’Hara in Season 1, as well as the Angel of Death from American Horror Story: Asylum will be returning as well.
Another familiar face to fans will be Lily Rabe. In Season 1, she portrayd Nora Montgomery, the wife of Doctor Montgomery who was providing illegal abortions out of the basement of their home. When she returned to Season 2, she played Sister Mary Eunice, assistant to Jessica Lange’s Sister Jude.
Also returning from Season 1 will be Denis O’Hare, who portrayed resident dead guy Larry Harvey, and Jamie Brewer who played Addie, the daughter of Jessica Lange’s character Constance.
While information on their characters has not yet been released, if it is anything like the previous two seasons, I am sure that we are in for many twists and turns along the way.
There are two characters that are being added to the cast that are actually based on real people.
Joining the cast this season is the phenomenal Kathy Bates. She will play Madame LaLaurie. The real Madame LaLaurie was a Louisiana-born socialite who was known for torturing and killing her slaves. Producer Ryan Murphy referred to Madame LaLaurie as “the most evil woman ever.”
Also joining the case is Angela Bassett. She will be playing the role of Marie Laveau. Marie Laveau was a renowned “voodoo queen” who lived during the 1800’s.
There is something very ominous about her role, as you can see in the trailer below.
Other new faces joining the cast of Coven are Emma Roberts (We’re The Millers, Scream 4) who will play a self-involved party girl named Madison, Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, Tower Heist), Grey Damon (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), and Tony Award winning actress Patti LuPone.
I don’t know about you, but I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to delve deeper into the Coven. The American Horror Story franchise has never disappointed, and has always excelled at reinventing itself from season to season.
With a cast that includes some of the absolute best that Hollywood has to offer right now, there is no doubt in my mind that Coven will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and be a chilling, nail biting adventure into the unknown.
American Horror Story: Coven begins on October 9th on FX.
