While Colin Kaepernick certainly has no competition for his starting quarterback gig, the same can’t be said for the backup duties.

The San Francisco 49ers have been searching for a reserve to claim the second spot on the depth chart for months, but so far, the results have been less than inspiring.

Both Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien have been nothing short of awful (especially McCoy), which has lead to the door being left open for rookie B.J. Daniels to claim the backup spot.

It’s something that 49ers insider Matt Maiocco believes is a distinct possibility, suggesting that Daniels’ relatively solid play could not only earn him a roster spot, but could also earn him the backup role.

Per CSN Bay Area:

"Now, it seems the 49ers almost have to keep B.J. Daniels on the 53-man roster. If they expose him to waivers with the plan of bringing him back to the practice squad, some team will claim him. Because of his strong arm (he has the most arm talent on the team behind Kaepernick) and his running ability, Daniels now has a legitimate chance to open as the No. 2."
