The Arizona Cardinals have decided to add another veteran kicker to their roster.

According to Adam Schefter on Twitter, the red birds of the desert have agree’d to terms with kicker Dan Carpenter on a one year contract. Carpenter was released by the Miami Dolphins last week in favor of the younger and cheaper Caleb Sturgis.

Now he will compete against strong and accurate Jay Feely. Feely is also a former Miami Dolphin as he played with the team back in 2007. So now that the Cardinals have two veteran kickers on their roster, what does this say about Arizona and Feely?

I think this signing was made to give Feely somewhat a feel of what competition feels like, knowing Carpenter took Feely’s job in Miami. He has been strong over the last three seasons going 68-79 (86%) on field goals. That includes going five of seven from 50+ yards. He did miss a 30 yard attempt in the last pre-season game.

I just don’t see Feely losing his job in Arizona, so Carpenter will probably be released within the next week or so. Unless this team wants to carry Carpenter into the season and have him as a back up in case something happens to Feely, then that wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
