Many expected the Denver Broncos to head in to the regular season with Ronnie Hillman as the team’s starting running back, but he has been horrific in the preseason and that has caused some hesitation when it comes to naming the team’s No. 1 rusher.

The Denver Broncos responded to Hillman’s poor performance in the team’s third preseason game of the year by urging John Elway to make a chance.

Mark Kiszla wrote:

"In the race for starting running back, only one thing is certain: It cannot be Hillman.Knowshon Moreno, one of those much-maligned first-round draft choices of former coach Josh McDaniels, might not be an inspirational choice to start the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, but his experience probably would allow coach John Fox the least reason to stare with apprehension at the ceiling at night."

This isn’t to say that Hillman can’t eventually develop into a starter for the team, but he just isn’t ready right now.

The Broncos are too good to have a ball carrier turning it over consistently and they need to make sure they do what it takes to protect Peyton Manning. Right now, Knowshon Moreno is the player that gives the team the best chance at making those things happen.
