The Chicago bears though Trent Edwards might be able to become a serviceable backup in the even Jay Cutler were to go down with an injury, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore:

Jordan Palmer and Trent Edwards were competing for a third quarterback spot

Palmer started Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, and Edwards was his backup.

The longtime friends were roommates during college at an Elite 11 quarterback camp, but it appears Palmer may have beat-out his friend for an NFL roster spot:

"“Nobody came up to me and said: ‘If you play well you’re on the team, and if you don’t you’re out,'” said Palmer, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown in the 18-16 loss to the Browns. “So, I had no idea. It allowed me to put everything into two categories: the stuff I need to focus on, and everything else is noise. It allowed me to focus on moving the ball and making good decisions.”"
