While it was announced earlier today that New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez would likely be out for Week 1, there was hope for a quick return after that.

Not according to ESPN’s Ed Werder, who said on Sportscenter this afternoon that Sanchez’s injury is ‘multi-week’ and he could be out for the foreseeable future.

Suggesting it was a ‘bruise’, Werner hinted that Sanchez will need some considerable rest to give the injury time to heel and that it could be Week 3 or Week 4 before he is able to return, possibly even longer.

The Jets have tried to play down Sanchez’s injury, possibly to save the skin off of Rex Ryan’s back who stupidly inserted Sanchez in a meaningless preseason game in attempt to ‘win’, as Ryan put it.

Sanchez’s injury, especially given the nature of it (assuming it’s as bad as Werder hints it might be) would give Geno Smith the starting nod, something he could run with if he plays well or the Jets as a team can string a few wins together before Sanchez would be ready.
