New York Jets offensive coordinator wants to start Geno Smith over Mark Sanchez
By Bryan Rose
As if the New York Jets didn’t have enough quarterback drama to deal with on a daily basis, now there appears to be a split between the coaching staff on who to start.
While the Jets have been relatively non-committal in the media, a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport suggests that Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg would prefer to start rookie Geno Smith over Mark Sanchez.
Per Rapoport:
"From Total Access: I’m told if OC Marty Mornhinweg has a vote in the QB competition, his vote is for Geno Smith… even if Sanchez is healthy"
In an effort to deflect blame from himself, head coach Rex Ryan said he would ‘listen to the voices’ in the organization before he named his starter.
Neither Smith nor Sanchez have set the world on fire during training camp and the preseason, though Sanchez’s injury which apparently might be a ‘multi-week’ situation could open the door just wide enough for Smith to take the job and run with it.
Either way, Mornhinweg’s endorsement for Smith isn’t a good sign for Sanchez.
