The writing had been on the wall for Austin Collie for quite some time and today the San Francisco 49ers made it official, cutting the talented though injury riddled wide receiver.

Per Matt Barrows:

"Source: 49ers have told WR Austin Collie that they will release him."

Collie, a Northern California native hoped to revive his career with the 49ers and looked to have a relatively solid chance considering the Niners’ apparent lack of depth at wide receiver (though, they’ve looked pretty solid through the preseason).

But Collie quickly fell behind on the depth chart and still looked to struggle with basic receiving routes and moves, stemming from his torn patellar tendon which he suffered in 2012.

Given his knee issues, combined with his concussion history, it might be time for Collie to hang up his cleats, sad as that might be.

He’ll try to latch on to another team, but if he couldn’t find a spot with the 49ers who were in some pretty desperate need, it’s unlikely he’ll find much of a role elsewhere.
