San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh spoke out about the difficulty of cutting certain players and what goes through a coach’s mind on final cut down day.  NFL teams were forced to cut down their rosters to the mandatory opening day total of 53 by 6 pm ET on Saturday.

According to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Harbaugh had this to say about the final day of expanded rosters:

“There were a lot of worthy players,” Harbaugh said. “The thing that was profound to me was that so many guys improved, so many of the guys were ascending players right up to point of making the final roster.”

“It made the day for me an exciting and good day by the efforts of the players and what our coaches accomplished over the offseason and the training camp. To see young football players ascend and get better as football players, that’s very exciting to me.”

San Francisco might have one more cut to make if reports are true that Jim Harbaugh is considering bringing in fullback Owen Marecic.  Marecic played for Harbaugh at Stanford and is one of his favorites.  The move would make sense after the 49ers lost budding star tailback LaMichael James for at least 3 weeks to open the season.
