As was reported earlier, the New Orleans Saints signed wide receiver Robert Meachem today. Meachem was cut by the San Diego chargers despite the team owing him $5 million for the 2013 season.
Meachem spoke to The Times-Picayune today about the perception that his body has broken down to the point where he’s no longer a functional receiver, outright denying the claim: “I’m strong physically. You know where I am right now.”
Meachem continued:
"It was just a new different thing for me (in San Diego). Their plan was different. It wasn’t anything specific (about scheme or role). I just didn’t think it was the best fit for me — for them or for me. The move back will be a lot better. Coming home, just being around family and team again. I think that will help me a whole lot."
It’s safe to say that San Diego Chargers fans won’t be too upset about seeing Meachem, considered a bust of a free-agent signing, pack his bags. Let’s hope the 28-year-old receiver can return to the level of play he demonstrated during his first stint with the Saints, when he racked up 2,269 yards and 23 touchdowns.
