We learned over the weekend that the Cincinnati Bengals released fullback John Conner and the season finale of HBO’s Hard Knocks touched on the moment that “The Terminator” was released with a great scene that featured Conner sitting down with head coach Marvin Lewis.

Conner was unhappy that he was being cut and was genuinely surprised, but the Bengals thought it would be best to go with the more versatile and younger option in Orson Charles, despite the fact that he struggled to transition from tight end to fullback.

“This is a hard one. I know you’ve put your heart and soul into this,” Lewis said to Conner. “You didn’t do anything wrong. You have done everything. It’s more just maybe the versatility of Orson, not necessarily what you didn’t do. Orson’s contribution on special teams may be more.”

The surprise from Conner was immediately noticeable, but he confirmed it when he simply stated, “I’m shocked, but it’s a business.”

Like most of us that have been keeping up with the NFL and watching teams needs with free agent options, Lewis let the veteran know that he expects him to catch on with another team this season.

So far, Conner has received no interest, but it is still early and anything can change at the drop of a coin.
