The New York Giants have a solid core of wide receivers with Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle, but it looks like one of those players could be on the outs when his contract expires. Randle is still in his rookie deal and Cruz just signed a big money deal, which leaves Nicks as the odd man out.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Giants and Nicks have not even begun talking contract and there is a chance that they may never do so.

From the Pro Football Talk report:

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the two sides aren’t talking as the final year of Nicks’ contract commences.  While it’s easy to assume the Giants will use the franchise tag on Nicks, keep two important things in mind.First, it will be very expensive to use the tag, in excess of $10 million.  Second, the Giants don’t use the franchise tag very often.Over the last 20 years, they’ve used it only three times."

If Nicks hits the open market, then there will be a quality receiver available for the highest bidder.

When you look at the kind of money Mike Wallace got this past offseason for being a one trick pony, it will be interesting to see how the Nicks market would play out.
