MLB Trade Rumors has written about the possibility that Jean Segura’s contract may be extended by the Milwaukee Brewers. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers offered an extension at the beginning of the season that Segura and his agent turned down due to Segura’s limited experience. Basically neither Segura or his agent knew what he would be worth and any offer at that time would have been extremely team friendly.

Extending Segura definitely makes sense now though. With more plate appearances both the team and his agent have a better idea of where is value is, and Segura still has leverage with arbitration years quickly approaching.

Segura’s breakout campaign probably comes as no surprise to him and I am sure that the Brewers would be more than happy to get him signed long term and allow him to keep wrecking havoc on the basepaths like he did this season.

I am always a fan of signing these young players quickly before they really start to understand just how valuable they are. When you get them taken care of at a young age they really trust you and come to believe that you have their best interest at heart as well. It saves the team a bunch of money in the long run also.
