While maybe not a savior, David Wilson was expected to be the running back of the future for the New York Giants.
That lasted about fifteen minutes.
After fumbling just minutes into the game, Wilson failed to pick up a blitz and then again fumbled, resulting in his benching. Now, apparently lacking confidence in his ability, the New York Giants are set to workout a handful of veteran free agent running backs, including former Giant Brandon Jacobs.
Per Mike Garafolo:
The Giants will work out RBs tomorrow. The group will include Brandon Jacobs.
Jacobs of course spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers, a marriage which didn’t end smoothly as the Niners released Jacobs who complained about his lack of a role.
The former Southern Illinois running back is just a season removed from a seven touchdown campaign with the Giants, so it seems as if the Giants are hoping Jacobs, considering his knowledge of their system, will be able to step right in, assuming they sign him to a contract.
