The San Diego Chargers are expected to have second-round draft pick Manti Te’o return to the practice field this week for the first time since getting injured early in the preseason. Te’o injured his foot on August 8, but he is on track to return on Wednesday, according to the Union-Tribune San Diego.

In Te’o’s absence, third-year pro Bront Bird has emerged from the back up role to tie for a team leading 15 tackles after two weeks.

The Chargers defense has given up over 30 points in the first two games of the season, so any way they can improve on the defensive side of the ball will be welcomed.

Te’o has a nose for the ball and was a playmaking linebacker during his times at Notre Dame, so if he could even come close to finding that kind of success in San Diego that he had in college, then the Chargers defense could be given a boost whenever Te’o returns to the field.

We should learn shortly after Te’o’s practice if he is on track to make his regular season debut in Week 3.
