The fifth time is a charm for Max Scherzer. Scherzer succeeded in winning his Major League Leading 20th win of the season Friday night on his fifth attempt. There was little suspense in this one as the Tigers jumped all over the Chicago White Sox in the first 3 innings taking a commanding 7-1 lead.

Pitching through on-again, off-again, rain showers, Scherzer showed mental toughness in securing this milestone win. Scherzer allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in his 6 innings of work.

I believe that this win will wrap up the race for the American League Cy Young award. Scherzer got off to a blistering start to the season going 13-0 and while it has taken a while to get his 20th, there really hasn’t been anyone better in the American League. The Tigers have needed him to pitch well as Justin Verlander has surprisingly struggled, according to his standards, this season collecting a 13-12 record on the year.

My prediction for the ALCS is the Red Sox and the Tigers. I think the depth of both pitching staffs sets them apart, but I believe that the Tigers will make a second consecutive trip to the World Series. Their lineup is too potent and the top of their rotation is excellent.
